Modesty from the Scientific view
Movies and books have the power to change a person’s character and behavior. What a person watches, can change their character. In one experiment conducted by two scientists, James B. Weaver from Virginia Tech, VA and Dolt Zimmerman from University of Alabama, AL experimented to see the effect of a viewer’s character by asking students, both male and female, to watch five violent films each night.
According to their results, both scientists found that no matter what type of film it was, they reacted in a hostile manner toward the experimenter. The study showed that this prolonged exposure to the violent films can escalate hostile behavior in both men and women. They determined that the effect is not short lived, but remains for some time after the viewing of the films.
This experiment states that if someone watches something that is violent, it can cause someone to react violently. After watching movies, a person either benefits and improves their character or is harmfully affected by what they've watched and deteriorates in their character. The more a person brings harmful or beneficial things into his/her life, the more their character changes. Similarly, violent movies lead to violent behavior whereas immodest movies lead to immodest behavior. It doesn't necessarily happen automatically. It usually happens gradually. The more a person brings it into his or her life, the more their character changes.
In the same way, a person’s modesty and character can be affected by seeing people dressed immodestly or by looking at pictures or videos of people who are immodest in their actions or dress. There are stories of Muslims who dress modestly but they have friends who dress immodestly. Since they always hang out with their friends, they get used to seeing immodest clothing around them. Eventually, their friends urge them to dress immodestly and even after being used to seeing the way their friends dress, they try to dress immodestly. Slowly, they stop wearing modest clothes, and they start dressing the way their friends do, and that immodest dressing, or dressing that exposes parts of the body can affect their modest character and it can to act immodestly like their friends.
